Twilight Birthday Cake

Posted by Jennifer at 2:10 PM 1 comments
I don't know much about Twilight but I do know there are some die-heart fans out there! I've done a few Twilight themed cakes in the past and this time we went with a different idea. Geysan had some of Valeria's favorite quotes from the book and so I wrote them all around the cake. I used the iconic chess pieces, apple, flowers, and ribbon from the books too. The cake was After Dinner Mint Cake and Snow white Cake (see my whole flavor list at www.SaltCakeCity.com). Ah, Team Edward, Team Jacob? I don't know but love to make the cakes for them!

Grandkids Anniversary Cake

Posted by Jennifer at 4:37 PM 0 comments
Karen wanted an anniversary cake for her parents and wanted to feature the grandkids... all 11 of them! I was wondering how in the world I could incorporate 11 different grandchildren into one fall-themed cake and this is what we cake up with. Karen sent me a picture of all the kids and I created little cartoon versions of them with marshmallow fondant and then piped their names on with buttercream. The top tier was 24-Carrot Cake and the bottom tier was Banana Cream Pie Cake (one of my favorites!) The whole cake is covered in marshmallow fondant with MMF leaves and faces. So much fun! I hope the kids got to eat their own pieces :)

Rock On Baby Shower Cake!

I loved making this baby shower cake! It was so much fun to recreate the Rock'n'Roll design based on the baby shower invitation. The cake was Mocha Java Cake (YUUUUUUUM!) and was all buttercream with marshmallow fondant decorations (the blue and skull parts). I used edible food coloring to create the shading on the top of the cake and then hand-piped the little designs all over the sides. Soooo cute!

Red, White, & Purple Wedding Cake!

Posted by Jennifer at 11:37 PM 0 comments
Okay, so I know the color looks blue here... but I promise, it was much more purple. It's weird how my purple never shows up correctly. Anywho... The cake was covered in marshmallow fondant and then I piped the swirl design in the middle tier (wow, I just said that in my last post!). It was English Toffee Cake & Rainbow Bright Cake. Yum! :)

Swirls & Quilting Wedding Cake

I ended up really loving this simple white wedding cake once I put the beautiful red roses on there. It's funny to me how sometimes I think some cakes look naked without flowers on them! Anyway, the cake was Samoa Says Cake and Southern Butter Pecan Cake (check out my website for more flavors and descriptions, www.SaltCakeCity.com). It's all covered in marshmallow fondant and then I piped the swirl design on the middle tier.

Yellow & Gray Square Wedding Cake

Posted by Jennifer at 12:13 PM 0 comments

This 4-tiered square cake was a twist (literally) on a Tiffany blue & black wedding cake I made a while back. The bride wanted something fun but still elegant. It was all covered in marshmallow fondant and then I added the white swirl pattern by piping it on there (painstakingly!). Yup, that takes a long time and kinda hurts! haha. Here's an up close photo of the piping.
The bride, Toni, chose Brownie Lovers cake, Just Peachy Cake, and Truffled Chocolate Cake. Yum! Here's a weird thought. I made this cake over a year ago but by just looking at it, I remembered the bride's name. Is that weird? I guess that's good, right?

Pink Ruffle Cake with Mini Cakes

Posted by Jennifer at 11:55 AM 1 comments
Cynthia wanted this pink ruffled cake that she had seen on the internet. I had been wanting to do this cake design as well so I was thrilled to get her order. This cake was around 6 inches tall and it was Neopolitan Dynamite Cake (layered chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla cake) covered in light pink buttercream, no fondant here. To go with the main cake, she wanted little mini cakes that were also Neopolitan Dynamite flavored. These tiny little things were so much fun to make (okay, they were difficult and frustrating too but in the end, I felt so rewarded :) These were covered in deep brown  marshmallow fondant and I piped initials and "4" on the top in honor of the little birthday girl. I love how simple, yet elegant both of these design were and how they complimented each other well.

Black Swirls & Blue Border Wedding

Posted by Jennifer at 9:56 AM 1 comments
Whitney wanted a big wedding cake to match the color scheme and feel of the wedding. She had seen a cake that she loved and wanted something similar. This 5-tiered cake  was covered in marshmallow fondant and then I hand-piped the swirls onto the cake. The border on the bottom was edged to give it more detail and then an aqua fondant band went around the cake as well. The cake flavor was Cookies & Cake, vanilla cake layered with crushed Oreos and buttercream.

This cake was a lot of hard work but lots of fun. Because the design isn't completely set, I get to sit and just pipe freely until my heart's content. Yay!

I have to say that Whitney's mother, Michelle, was awesome during the whole process. It's great to get to work with people who care about the same things I care about and who trust my abilities. I got to do Whitney's sister's wedding a few weeks ago as well and just appreciate the kindness of this family.

White & Black Separated Cake

Posted by Jennifer at 2:34 PM 0 comments
Chanelle wanted a really unique but also traditional wedding cake. We spent a lot of time figuring out which details to include and exclude for this wedding cake in order to get it perfect for her. We kept it traditional by using the columns to separate the cakes but threw in a more modern design with the floral designs and using a black and white color theme. The top two tiers were hand-piped designs, the third tier down was a floral designer stencil and the bottom tier was quilted with black dragees at the corners. The whole cake was covered in marshmallow fondant. Half of the cake was Chocolate cake with strawberry filling and the other half was White Chocolate Dipped Strawberry cake.

I have to admit a major fault here. Chanelle wanted the whole cake to be shimmered, which I think is so lovely because it shines beautifully. So I completed each tier, then sprayed the whole cake with edible pearl shimmer. I had a total panic attack when I realized that the shimmer on the black piping turned the black into silver. AH! I spent the next few hours hand painting all of the piping back into black. I felt so silly afterward!

So I try to assemble most of my cakes, if possible, before I get to the venue. There's really nothing more nerve racking than assembling a cake with a crowd of wedding guests surrounding me. Makes my hands shake!! Haha. This cake, however had to be assembled on site. I brought all of the back up supplies just in case I had a cake-tastrophy on the way over. Luckily, it was smooth sailing all the way. I loved the lighting behind the cake table as well. I placed the bride and groom on the top, added the cute purple flowers and took off just in time for the wedding to start. Yay!
